Why make room for the coast?

If your northern Japan trip already passes through Iwate, Kitayamazaki (北山崎) in Tanohata Village offers a complete change from cities and temples. It sits in the northern part of Sanriku Fukko National Park, where the official Tohoku tourism site describes cliffs around 200 meters high with oddly shaped rocks and sea caves along roughly eight kilometers of coastline.

Three viewpoints, three kinds of visit

The official guide describes three observation platforms:

From the viewing platforms, 736 steps lead down to sea level, where you look up at the cliffs instead of down on them. It is a rewarding walk, but remember that every step down is a step back up.

Seasons

The guide sketches each season: fresh greenery in spring, cold Pacific winds in summer, foliage in autumn and snowy scenes in winter. On the walking path behind the Kitayamazaki Visitor Center, white rhododendrons (shirobana-shakunage) bloom from early June to early July. We do not forecast weather, fog or foliage.

Getting there

The listing gives two options: about 140 minutes by car from Morioka Station, or about 20 minutes from Sanriku Railway’s Tanohata Station by a shared sightseeing cab that must be reserved in advance. Treat both as planning estimates, not confirmed bookings, and arrange your return before you go.
